Mr. P.M. Karuppannan, Chairman, Cheran Schools, Karur was born on 13.11.1934 at Kallipalayam, Attur. Despite his irresistible desire towards education, he could not continue his schooling after std: VIII owing to his family commitments. Since he wanted the students of Karur District to taste the nectar of education, he constructed a school in his own village in the year 1961 and handed over to the Government, after its inauguration, by the then C.M. of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Kamarajar.Due to his overwhelming inclination to serve the cause of education, he laid a strong foundation to Cheran by taking up the responsibility of a non-native’s school which was under an irrecoverable loss. Thus, the seeds for Cheran were sown in 1982 with just 100 students. The school was then functioning in his own place at Ramakrishnapuram, Karur.Later, they decided to upgrade the school from Primary to High school and hence they requested Mr.B.Selvadurai, the retired H.M. of M.H.S.S. to guide them in leading the school. Though he initially hesitated, he later accepted their offer and from then on, he has been helping the Management with his valuable advice.The school developed gradually and gained name and fame throughout the district, providing quality education to the student community. Since the land area was insufficient, the school was shifted to Vennaimalai in 1999 and it has been functioning effectively in 9 acres of land with a total strength of 5276 students and 162 teachers.

Cheran has also imprinted its golden records in the field of Sports and Games by maintaining the Zonal Level Overall Championship for the past 17 years. Cheran is an abode of love, peace, tranquility, humanity, knowledge and charcter building. All these exhilarating and vivacious achievements of Cheran had been brought to light only with the unflinching and unwavering efforts of this simple and self-determined person Mr. P.M. Karupannan whose unbounded and illimitable yearning towards education has earned him the unmatched title “ Father of Karur’s Education”. His selfless service still continues and he will ever be a standing testimomy of the “Bestower of quality education.”
